The 'Ginger Club' of Foods and Nutrition Department organized a Nutrition Awareness Session on September13, 2017 which included a talk by Dr. Nikhil Nadkarni, Sr. Consultant DM, Gastroenterology, Max Health Care, Mohali on the topic "Obesity And Liver Diseases". The session was attended by B.Sc ( 5th semester) Dietetics, M.Sc.(1st and 3rd semester) Foods and Nutrition. Nearly 85 students along with the faculty members of department of Foods and Nutrition attended the seminar.
Dr. Nikhil has a vast experience as a senior resident at PGIMER, Chandigarh, as a consultant at GMCH, and as Assistant Professor, Medicine and Gastroenterology at Gian Sagar Medical College and Hospital, Punjab. He has participated and presented his scientific work in many international and national conferences. He has to his credit many publications in reputed national and international journals.
Dr. Nikhil explained the causes and consequences of obesity in a practical manner. He talked about various weight loss surgeries and treatment practiced by them and also mentioned the aftereffects of the same. He also highlighted the consequences of long term use of medications for weight loss and emphasized on healthy eating as the best approach to prevent lifestyle disorders. The role of heredity in obesity among adolescents was discussed. Interactions focused on the changing trends of obesity over the years. Apart from obesity, he also focused on liver diseases such as alcoholic and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. Students were also informed about stages of liver degeneration leading to Hepatic cirrhosis. The participants were informed about the importance of diet, healthy life style and meditation for achieving a healthy and balanced life. Dr. Nikhil shared his various interesting experiences during his career till date. The talk was decorated with a beautiful poetry written by himself on Obesity.
All the students enthusiastically participated the session and cleared their doubts related to thyroid, diabetes, hypertension, kidney and liver disorders and impact of obesity on various disorders. The seminar was very informative and was thoroughly enjoyed by the participants.
